Getting started...

Explore

Explore the world by reading descriptions shared by many others. And perhaps you can fill in some gaps on the map by contributing?

Contribute

Window Expeditions only works because of texts contributed by you, the community. Write a description of your surroundings, and share it with others. It can be as long or as short as you like. We will moderate your description (to make sure it is suitable for a general audience, including children) and then you, and others, will be able to find it on our world map. Registered users receive points for every description they write.

Likes

If you like a description, then you can like it. Registered users receive more points with likes, and can advance up the leader board.

Free and Prior Informed Consent

Before you start we would like to give you some basic information about our application. If you then decide to participate, you can click on 'Ok, let's go!' at the bottom of the page. This app was created at the University of Zurich as a research project in the Geocomputation Group, Department of Geography.

This application serves multiple purposes:
1) A playful approach of counteracting the effects of self-isolation and quarantine in times of COVID-19
2) Increase appreciation of our natural surroundings
3) Exchange landscape descriptions in a playful way
4) Generate a spatial corpus of landscape descriptions which will be published and shared with other researchers. No information allowing you to be identified will be published

You can contribute either anonymously, or by registering as a user. Registered users can access all of their contributions, delete their accounts at any time, and appear on our leader board.

To make an anonymous contribution we ask for some very limited demographic information (which we may then use in analysing the texts contributed):

  • Your year of birth which is encrypted and will not be publicly visible but can be used in further analyses of the data
  • Your gender which is encrypted and will not be publicly visible but can be used in further analyses of the data
  • A list of languages in which you believe you are very fluent which is encrypted and will not be publicly visible but can be used in further analyses of the data
We also ask for your permission to store this information using a Cookie, so that you do not need to enter it when making further anonymous contributions.

To register up you will need to provide following information:

  • A username which is publicly visible
  • Your email address which will be encrypted, will not be publicly visible, will not be used in further analyses and will not be given to third parties
  • A password which is encrypted and only used to log in

When contributing a landscape description the following information is stored:

  • The landscape description which, if you explicitly agree, will also be displayed on a public map and may be quoted in research publications.
  • The general location of a contribution. To ensure privacy, no exact coordinates will be saved. Your coordinates are transformed to the ID of a hexagonal grid with a grid cell diameter of ~1km
  • General spatial meta-data: zoom level when the map is first displayed, zoom level when a contribution is saved, the corner coordinates of the map extent when a contribution is saved and if the used device has location services enabled
  • How long it took to write the landscape description
  • Minimal device information provided by the browser which depends on the browser and device settings of the user. More information here
  • If you checked the 'I am at home' checkbox

Further points:

  • Contributions are moderated to detect and minimise misuse
  • Discriminatory, sexist or intolerant contributions will be deleted
  • Registered users may report inappropriate content which will be checked by moderators
  • Registered users may also be banned from the application
  • Registered users can delete individual contributions or their account and all uploaded data from the Window Expeditions application
  • The data contributed will be used and analysed in a research context

By clicking on 'Ok, lets go!' you agree that:

  • I am over 16 years old or that I have my parent's consent that I may sign up and contribute to Window Expeditions
  • I have been informed about the aims of this work.
  • I understand that my data may be published anonymously and that they may be shared with other researchers anonymously.
  • I am participating voluntarily, and can stop at any time without giving a reason, and with no repercussions
  • If I am a registered user, I can delete all my data from the Window Expedition application
  • I grant Windows Expeditions a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use, reproduce and modify my anonymised contributions for scientific research purposes
  • I own the contributions I upload and am responsible for their ownership
  • I have read and agree to the Data Privacy Statement
